There are so many times where i find that an attack is just so close to fatal that it feels almost unfair! Within 20 of killing a unit.
I think once per game you should be able to spend 1 key to active a boost button. This gives the next attack a fixed increase, say +25. The key could even come from your pool and not your currently allocated keys, making it a true bonus per game.
It would help even out the feeling that your phobies are just that bit weaker than your opponent, so yours can’t quite finish them off.
There is even potential for a whole host of perks that could be played this way, though you’d need to be careful they don’t cause imbalance.
Theres going to be times in any game where youre a small amount of damage short of killing a unit, its supposed to happen from time to time. Even if you do add a ‘spend 1 key to deal 25 damage’ you will then have scenarios where that spend 1 key to deal 25 will put the enemy 25 damage off being killed, so it isnt going to fix anything.
Though that will definitely happen, i don’t think it’s the same, at least emotionally.
Right now, it’s that feeling of darn so close, if only my units were 1 level higher, etc. And there’s no random, or gang up bonus, etc so there’s nothing you can do.
With the boost you have the option to add that little extra and make the kill.
In the case you described, you’re already stretching (maybe boost needs to be a little bigger to reduce those times e.g. 50). You’re not really close, and even with the boost you’re not going to make it. That’s not the same feeling, imo.
More likely is the time you kill a 1 point unit early on in the game with a boost, then want it again in the end game to finish off an 8 point unit. In that case it’s all your own fault
