[CONTEST] - Community Competition: Map & Phobie

It is Phobies Anniversary!! To celebrate we are having a community design competition! Design a new map AND new Phobie, with the chance to featured in game!! Map: Starting March 12th Ending March 24th Phobie: Starting March 19th Ending 31st

” Boss Statement” - Hi all, I think it’s going to be an exciting new year for Phobies, and we are really excited about the direction we are taking “Phobies Holdings Inc”. We are currently looking at our new Phobies plan for the year (and are working on some already). We have some exciting ideas but would love to have more people in this brainstorm session and who better to be in that, than all of you passionate players! Love to see what ideas you all have for new Phobies, and new abilities they might have. Also we are working on some new map designs to refresh the strategy and would love to see what you all come up with as well. Hope you all enjoy being involved in the creative process with us!

Map Competition:

Mechanics:

  1. Design a themed map for Phobies (theme must already exist in the game)! It can either be a small or large map, but make sure to use the following dimensions:

    • Also consider adding obstacles and special map tiles (lava, damage boost, etc.) if you want
  1. Indicate where the spawn points are and player bases/hearts.
  2. The map design can be digitally made or hand-drawn, the important thing is that the image is clear. NOTE: If it’s hand-drawn, you can submit a scanned image or take a photo of it but make sure the image is sharp and has even lighting
  3. Post your map design in this forum thread (discord thread)
  4. Include the following on with your entry
  • title/name of the map
  • your In-Game Name
  • indicate whether it’s a small or large map
  • theme
    • Maximum 5 entriesper forum account and IGN.*

Tips from our design team:

Ensuring the map is balanced for both player 1 and player 2 in terms of control points and distances. (says Captain Obvious)

It’s good to consider what the opening moves you want to have are for both players and walk yourself through those.

Ensure Player 1 does not get too much of an advantage on turn 1 (too many control points within spawning range sometimes causes issues, even if the map looks totally balanced.)

Having an even number of control points can be harder to make a map that doesn’t turn into a camp fest, but it can still work and there are some good ones we have produced that show this but many of the maps usually have an odd number of control points and Ideally multiple areas to battle on the map.

Criteria for judging:

50% Creativity – this refers to the map creatively plays and whether it’s balanced

20% Aesthetics - How it looks

20% Suitability for matches

10% Uniqueness, Originality

Prizes:

5 GRAND WINNERS – 25,000 Coffee Beans (each) + a chance for their maps to be included in the game

What exactly does it meant when you say the theme must already exist ingame? Like does the map need to based off of a certain phobie or a certain group of phobies?

it’s talking about map themes like “the classroom”, “the baby room”, “crypto maze” etc

Aesthetics:

-General: a giant underground undead worm in the spirit of Dune, Tremors, Star Wars, and Beetlejuice. I also considered a play off of Shai-Hulud for the name - something with “Shy” and it going underground seems fitting, but I can’t quite make it work.
-Sound: Deep “squee” sounds.
-Idle Animation: Burrows deeper and swallows some sand, then spits it out like a geyser.
-Tap Animation: Pops out of the ground a bit like it is trying to snatch something.
-Movement Animation: Underground burrow animation like Smother Mother.
-Ability Animation: The Maw springs up and swallows the Phobie it shares a tile with.

Aesthetics:
-For Jackalope Queen, she has a basic Jackalope model, but with a rusted crown on her head. All other sounds and animations are identical to the other Jackalopes, as is the case with Jackalope King. For her ability animation, a kind of undead self-construction animation takes place similar to a Voltron episode. The rest of these notes pertain to Jackalope Abomination alone.
-General: See the sample art below, which is website generated.
-Sound: A kind of “choir” or “echo” of the Jackalopes speaking together for the sound theme.
-Idle Animation: The Jackalopes turn to one another and have a small “conversation”.
-Tap Animation:
-Movement Animation: Heavy foot stomps that shake the screen as with Haphe’s tap animation.
-Attack Animation: Stomps a foot on the ground, causing a screen shake.
-Ability Animation: Fires a Jackalope arm-skull at the target like a rocket.

Aesthetics: -A grouchy looking eraser with a stick figure drawn on the eraser itself.
-Idle animation is scratching its chin. Begins to erase itself, is shocked, and stops.
-Tap animation is throwing hands up and shrugging in an irked “What do you want?” gesture.
-Walk animation looks like someone walking with their feet in a potato sack or pillow case.
-For Big Mistakes causes Scrub to start rubbing its arm on the adjacent tile. As his animation plays out, his body begins to vanish until it disappears completely. He looks annoyed during this process.

Topic: The map is inspired by “Never, Forever,” since to make good use of range 3 Phobies, you need to clear walls, which is difficult, making tanks and fliers very weak. So I came up with the idea of making better use of beam Phobies in line or range 3, as they are some of the most important picks for that map.

Featuring the Roller-coaster map and the new moving tiles:

As is shows in the first image, there are some types of tiles. Type of each tile, in order:
• Red: Moves only when a phobie is on top at the end of the turn of the phobie owner.
• Cyan: moves independently if there is a phobie or not, at the end of each turn.

• Yellow: Neutral tile, only for coloration.

• Red Panic Point: its a panic point that movies at the end of the turn of owner of the phobie that steps on top. (Also come in cyan tile, wich moves independently at the end of each turn)
• Blue and Orange Variants: they happen when a team capture the panic point.

In Roller-coaster map, with the 3 imagens (01 being the example), as you can see, when an phobie steps on the tile (image 02), it moves for the final destination if the turn ends. The priority of moving is: Moving Panic Point>Red Panic Point>Cyan Panic Point. So first the red one movies then the cyan moves, as you can see at image 03.

What happens if a flying phobie goes on top of it?

  1. It works as same as the conveyor tile, dont affecting flying phobies
  2. If a flying phobie steps in the way of a cyan tile with other phobie on top, it can stop the other phobie and it will fall in the abyss.

Aesthetics:

-A chewed up wad of pink bubble gum that’s been left on the ground for a bit too long. Theirs hair, gunk, grime, and a single googly eye stuck to the gum wad.

-Idle Animation has the phobie nuzzling itself into the ground to get more grime onto itself, kicking some dust up in the process. A small air bubble in the phobie forms like when you blow a bubble in gum and then the bubble pops startling the phobie.

-Tap animation is the googly eye almost coming off of the phobie and then it quickly fixes itself just in time.

-Walk animation is similar to Glob’s but add sticky and suction cup like sounds.

-For the Attack Animation make the phobie stretch itself back and then slingshot itself into the enemy phobie and then rubber band back into place.

-For the Stuck on You ability it makes the phobie take a piece of itself and throw it over to the its intended tile. Make the trap pink colored with bits of hair and grime on it. Trapped phobies have gum stuck to their body.

Here is my entry for the competition. It’s like an assistant that doesn’t take up space on your team. It’s a dial recolour that automatically chooses the Phobies that you summon, based on win-rate statistics. What could possibly go wrong?

Description:The brown part would be the abyss, and those trees would replace the stone-like obstacles that LAST RITES has. With that, come the portals that I increased. You can find them by observing the blue color near the abyss. How do they work? When a phobie stays in the portal at the end of the turn, it teleports to the other space that has the same color as the portal.
