I think of the game most of the time as chess. Depending on the map, I always try to position myself to be able to attack/defend the most important squares and, in turn, those that reach them on the opposite side, in the same way as in chess. We position the chips to control the squares d5,e5 and d4,e4 for example.

tbh yes it is like chess. The only real way to win is let your enemies get to aggresive. Once they do, you can counter them in your most creative ways.
I think the best strategy varies depending on the map and whether you are first or second. For example, on large maps, being second, you can summon 2 cards with 3 keys, which are the most meta, instead of just one. On a certain map, if I’m second, I like to open with a jar cannon and grave digger so that on turn 4 I can break and approach an in-occulus with a boomer to cover in case it threatens, and if I play base rush I simply change direction. scare the opponent with a false base rush.
that too

I’ve played quite a bit of both games and I personally find phobies quite different to chess. Firstly, all your units are unique, but primarily it is the behavior and interaction of your units vs the opponents units. In chess there is an identical army facing off, in phobies i find the battles tend to be several smaller fights, where a cluster of supporting units face off against 1 or more opposing units. I also find the spending/saving of keys very different. E.g. In chess, you can’t save for a few turns then move your queen 3 times.
obviously is a different game, but u know, similar.
It is more than just a little different, IMO the only similarity is that they are both turn based strategy games. They differ after that in almost every way.
Probably the most fundamental way is that in chess I can do full look ahead (I take, he takes, I move, he takes, etc), I’d argue this is a critical part of the game of chess. This is impossible in Phobies because I cannot know what units my opponents can bring out, I may not even have ever seen a unit that they can produce. Also the summing of the attacks is much harder to do in Phobies. In chess if I have 2 pieces that can attack 1 other, then I have 2 options (A takes, then B, or B takes, then A). In Phobies I have many more A attack 1, A attack 2, B attack 1, B attack 2; or A attack1, B attack1, A attack 2, B attack 2, etc, etc. And all those attacks change what I should do depending on what I am attacking (e.g. does it hurt me when it dies) and how much health it has and do I need to produce another unit to finish it off.
There are so many options, I find it impossible to use raw look ahead, as you do in chess. I can only do high level strategizing. e.g. I’m going to cluster here to make sure I have enough fire power to overcome anything that tries to come too close. Personally I cannot think of that more than 1 move ahead, I move my units in response to my opponents last move in the hope that I can reduce their options for next turn.
However, don’t take any of this as a negative, I have played ~3 chess games this year, I have played Phobies every day. I wish I was still good at look ahead, but I do not practice it anymore and it really shows when I try and play chess using a Phobies style strategy.
Having said that, Phobies style strategy is far more applicable in daily life. It is far more likely I need to make an immediate decision based on incomplete information, than need to work out the best sequence of tasks given complete information.
